PR and Marketing

What is the difference between public relations and marketing?

CPCommunications breaks down an analysis of how PR and marketing are related. Below we are going to briefly look at each section:

1. Activities/Tactics

- Marketing deals with promotions and advertising

- PR deals with promoting positive news pieces and communication with stakeholders

2. Target Audiences

- Marketing looks to reach out to current and potential customers

- PR looks to maintain those positive relationships with anyone who is interested

3. Two Separate Goals

- Marketing's goal is to reach consumers and sell the product/service

- PR's goal is to "sell" the business in a positive light on communication channels

4. Legitimacy of messages

- Marketing uses messages to push sales, or this is how it is seen by consumers. They do present articles with known journalists or professional presentations

- PR uses channels like articles, speakers at conferences, and reputable blogs, which seems more legitimate to consumers because it is outside the company and doesn't have the marketing tactics

5. Business ROI

- Marketing involves paid branding and promotional activities, which includes new customers being their ROI

- PR can be seen as a form of free posting that increases the credibility for their image

6. Longevity

- Marketing can be a short term process

- PR can see benefits of their work over long periods of time

Both marketing and public relations have benefits in each of these six sections. Be sure to look at marketing and public relations definitions and purposes before deciding which fits best for your work. Marketing is more sales based, while PR is for positive relationships. As you explore and use both marketing and public relations for your business, you will see the success!
